I must admit I blew a bit hot and cold about this book. In the early stages, I had it no higher than perhaps 2* but by the end,I found myself really enjoying it and wanting to come back to it. Can I say how refreshing it was not to see it heralded as 'First of a brilliant new series..' How are they to know how successful it's going to be?! However, it's not really giving anything away to say that in his author's note at the end, Russell admits a sequel is in the pipeline. Will I read it? Yes - almost certainly. But why oh why do we have to have yet another mention of Patrick O'Brian in critic's quote? I've tried about three times to read O'Brian and failed each time. Like dense treacle to me I'm afraid. Russell is far more readable. Not as 'literate' maybe but not at all bad. Perhaps he's made mistakes - I think he's attempted too many strands to the story for a start and his main character - Hayden - although likeable, seems to be a bit of a superman who does little wrong. In the same way, perhaps Hart, the captain is portrayed too extremely for belief. I also think he overdoes the Aldrich thing. Don't expect huge line-of-battle accounts. You'll get some fictitional skirmishes and a bit of blood and guts but not over much. No real life figures [although there's one mention of an up-and-coming little guy from Norfolk!]. Don't mean to sound negative - bottom line, as I've said, is that I enjoyed it!
